Techno Gears Marble Mania Orbiter Review

I love toys that encourage creativity and thinking, that is why I was excited to review the Techno Gears Marble Mania from  with my kids. There are 13 different kits available, and we received the Orbiter set in the space series.

As you can see from the picture the set comes with instructions completely unassembled and ready to build.  When I got out all of the pieces I was surprised at how many parts there were–over 200.  We have a family friend that kept eyeing the box every time he saw it, and this is right up his alley, so on a Sunday afternoon I set him and my son to building.

Even though the age range is for 6+ I would recommend this toy for at least an 8 or 9 year old if they are going to be working alone on constructing the marble pathway.  The instructions are a little vague in some areas and the pieces are a little tricky to snap together so it took a little trial and error to figure out how to fit the pieces together correctly.  My son is 5 and an avid Lego builder but he would have been unable to build this toy without the help of an adult.  This is the smallest set available, there are a few other sets with 300+, and even 400+ pieces so depending on the age of your child hopefully this review will help you figure out what set will be best for your kiddo.

marble track from start to finish
There are two parts to this toy; first the building, and second playing with the finished project.  I think the building time is great for children to learn about trial and error, brainstorming, following directions, and feeling a sense of accomplishment after completing a difficult task.  This kit takes about 1.5 to 2 hours to build, and that was without any breaks.  Using the track after it has been completed is, of course, a reward for the hard work your child has put into it.  Playing with the track and watching the marbles go down the path was my kids favorite part!  The track itself has lots of fun twists and turns that kept the kids interest and engaged.  I do wish that the pieces held together a little better.  The track seemed to fall apart pretty easily if my three year old accidentally bumped into it and the gear to crank the marbles up kept falling off unless you held on to it.

Despite a few hiccups while putting the track together, this toy offers something more than many other toys out there.  Your child gets an fun experience while building the set on top of the enjoyment of using the finished product.  Any toy that does double duty is a win in my book.
