The Lone Ranger Review

If someone told me twenty years ago that I would be excited to go see “The Lone Ranger” I would have laughed in their face. While it may be hard for my younger self to admit it, I was beyond excited to see this movie!

Producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Gore Verbinski, the team that brought us “Pirates of the Caribbean” is at it again! This time they are bringing back to life the 1933 radio show and subsequent television show, “The Lone Ranger”. They worked hard to bring the story of the famed, masked hero back to life for a new generation, through new eyes. It is a fun, action packed adventure and is certainly a wild ride!

This cinematic version of “,” tells the tale of how John Reid, a man of the law is transformed into the legend of justice and how he teamed up with Tonto to fight against greed and corruption. This story is told from the perspective of Tonto and therefore Tonto definitely takes more of a staring role in this film, which can be a

challenge for purist fans of “The Lone Ranger” to accept since Tonto is more of a sidekick in the traditional version. I thoroughly enjoyed the nods to the original with catch phrases and themes that we have all come to know and love over the years. I did however appreciate that they took the risk to tell a classic story from a different perspective.

At times Johnny Depp’s portrayal of the beloved Tonto seemed a little reminiscent of Captain Jack Sparrow. That didn’t take away from the film at all for me. While the characters have a lot in common (including a few missing screws), they were also very different. I really enjoyed seeing the story of Tonto’s youth. It explained a lot!

When it came to The Lone Ranger himself, John Reid (Armie Hammer), I felt that he did a great job. While he embodied the man of law with an inner struggle, his character was not as fully developed as that of Tonto. That is however acceptable in my book because the story was being told by Tonto. Hopefully, if there is a sequel, we will learn more about John Reid.

This film is very appropriately rated as PG-13. It would not be suitable for young children due to violence and occasionally grim and less “G Rated” settings. Technically speaking the movie was a total blockbuster! Amazing graphics, editing and cinematography! It was very well made in many ways. It also featured an all star cast that also starred Tom Wilkinson, William Fichtner, and Helena Bonham Carter. When the movie ended I was amazed that I hadn’t felt a lull. I was thoroughly entertained and absolutely enjoyed myself. “The Lone Ranger” opens in the US on July 3, 2013 and is definitely worth seeing!
